Careful evaluations may lead physicians to believe that arthroplasty (knee replacement) may be premature for some mid- or late-stage patients of knee OA, but they may benefit from corrective osteotomy to prevent or slow deterioration due to uneven loading. Corrective osteotomy is suitable for people who do manual work. But it is important that the patient, before the surgery, fully understand that osteotomy is not a cure, that it only buys him or her some time to postpone knee replacement, and that it makes future knee replacement surgery more difficult to perform.
Osteotomy is more suitable for patients of traumatic osteoarthitis that is caused by malunion.
